I like to combine mediums by cutting maps, magazines, gold leaf, pieces of my own hair, among other things. This is more labor-intensive than building a regular palate of paint. You cannot simply squirt dollops of color, mix, and paint. You must flip through books and collect scraps over time, then experiment with how you want to orient them on the canvas until you find the right fit. It is like building your own puzzle over and over. I need to make sure my windows are closed to prevent drafts of wind from blowing everything away. After this process of laying down material, I like to paint details with acrylic. While drawing and painting are much simpler, the collage is really where my passion and creativity live.

Most in this collection were painted in Mexico, where I felt inspired by everything around me. I would take pictures simply to paint the images later. I used oil mainly, then when I came home and began working full time I found I lost patience with oil and moved to acrylic. Both have such different and wonderful qualities.

The work in this collection ranges from college sketches to commissions, and all are untitled. People who ask me for a drawing tend to want an illustration for an invitation or stationary, or a rendition of a loved one. It makes me very happy to fulfill these requests, and I can do so in a timely fashion.
